PLATES247 respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use our website, order number plates or contact us, why we need it, and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Who we are
PLATES247 is the data controller for your personal information. You can contact us about this policy or your data at:
- Address: 51 Northmoor Road, Longsight, Manchester M12 5QE
- Email:
- Phone or WhatsApp:
The information we collect
- Order details: your name, email address, phone number, delivery address, the registration you order and the plates you choose.
- Identity and entitlement documents: for road legal plates, your driving licence number, surname and date of birth, a photo of your licence, and the reference number and a photo or PDF of your V5C logbook (or green slip, V750 or V778). The law requires us to keep these records for three years. We look up your registration with the DVLA to confirm the vehicle. Your licence and V5C are read on your own device to check them against what you type; they aren't sent anywhere else for that check.
- Payment information: payments are handled by our payment providers. We don't see or store your full card details.
- Messages: anything you send us through the contact form, email, phone, WhatsApp or social media.
- Newsletter: your email address, if you sign up for new styles and offers.
Why we use your information
We never sell your personal information, and we don't use it for any other purpose without telling you first.
Who we share it with
We only share your information when we need to, with:
- delivery companies such as Royal Mail, so they can deliver your plates
- payment providers, to take your payment securely
- the DVLA, the police or other authorities when the law requires it
- service providers who help us run the business and may only use it on our instructions: Shopify (checkout, payments and orders), Vercel (website hosting and private storage of document photos) and jsDelivr (delivers the text-reading and PDF tools to your browser)
- the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service, which receives the registration you order so we can look up the vehicle
Some of these providers are based in, or use servers in, the USA or Canada. Where your information leaves the UK, it's protected by UK adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
Document checks run on your own device: your licence and V5C are read in your browser to find your name, date of birth, licence number, registration and V5C reference number, and aren't sent to anyone else for that check.
If you message us on WhatsApp, your messages are also handled by WhatsApp (Meta) under its own privacy policy.
How long we keep it
- Sales records, document numbers and document photos: 3 years from the sale, as required for registered number plate suppliers. Document photos are deleted automatically after 3 years, and we remove document details from our order records at the same point.
- Unfinished checkouts: documents uploaded without completing an order are deleted after 7 days.
- Order and accounting records: up to 6 years, for tax purposes.
- Messages: for as long as needed to help you, and no longer than 2 years.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
Cookies and third-party services
Our website doesn't use cookies to track you, and we don't use advertising or analytics cookies. Our fonts are served from our own website. The map on our contact page only loads from Google Maps if you choose to show it, and Google then receives your IP address and may set cookies. Your basket is saved in your browser's storage so it's still there when you come back; this is needed for the shop to work. Checkout and payments are handled by Shopify under its own privacy policy. Links to Google, WhatsApp, TikTok and Instagram take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies.
Keeping your information safe
We take appropriate steps to protect your information, including limiting who can see your documents and deleting them once we no longer need to keep them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- ask us to correct information that's wrong or incomplete
- ask us to delete your information, unless we have to keep it by law
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your information
- ask us to transfer your information to someone else
- withdraw your consent at any time, for example to unsubscribe from our newsletter
To use any of these rights, contact us using the details above. We'll reply within one month.
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please contact us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated.
